Preschool: What your child should know
No two kids are alike. It's OK for children to be at different levels. A child's unique differences should be welcomed and accepted. Also keep in mind, that a child's level of readiness in August will be very different from what it is in December, for example. It does, however, help to have a rough idea of which academic and social skills your child should acquire at his or her grade level.
Skills your child will be expected to have in preschool:
- Self care without help (eating, toilet, dressing, hand washing)
- Safety (what not to touch, stay away from the street, danger, etc.)
- Communicate in sentences
- Ask for help when needed
- Obey parents and others in authority
- Learn how to play with friends- share, practice modesty, manners and kindness
- Help with simple chores
- Talk about position and direction (left, right, under, over, in, out...)
- Name colors
- Count to 10
- Count objects (toys, pens, fingers)
- Recognize the difference between numbers and letters
- Say or sing the ABC
- Recognize their first name in print
- Recognize basic shapes
- Use scissors
